10 Principles for Healthy Places
A happier, healthier future for you and your family.
It’s a new approach to community living, framed by the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the world’s largest group of thought-leaders in real estate development. This approach encourages:
- Walkability & access to nature
- Social connections
- Recreation & fun
- Enhanced property values
Talis Trails is building a community based on the “Ten Principles for Healthy Places” as defined by ULI. Here’s how:
1. Put People First: At TalisTrails, healthy living is central to the design of this upcoming 900-acre community in Tallahassee. It blends nature with outdoor amenities like bike trails, sport courts, new homes, restaurants, and business spaces. Located next to the 503-acre Miccosukee Canopy Road Greenway, TalisTrails offers access to 17 miles of trails. The community’s own trail network will support walking, biking, jogging, and connect with the Greenway.
2. Recognize Economic Value: Vibrant, active mixed-use communities provide economic benefit and appeal to a wide range of Millennials and Baby Boomers. Residents of all ages, ranging from young families to active adults, will enjoy a lifestyle with family-focused amenities and nature-first recreation that emphasizes active, healthy living. The community’s commercial development will offer restaurants, retail and business space, providing convenient services and economic opportunity.
3. Empower Champions for Health: Community engagement is key to a healthy community. Like other GreenPointe communities, TalisTrails will feature character-defining elements in its design and programs for active, healthy living. Family-focused events, like a 5K run, along with active amenities, will foster engagement and a strong appreciation for nature.
4. Energize Shared Spaces: TalisTrails is planned with vibrant community destinations, offering opportunities for residents and the community to socialize with friends and family as well as engage with others. Shared open spaces will make it possible to interact with nature. Plans include an onsite lifestyle director leading activities and social gatherings for residents of all ages to enjoy.
5. Make Healthy Choices Easy: TalisTrails will make healthy living safe, accessible and enjoyable. The trail network will connect to the Miccosukee Greenway, providing miles of paths for walking, biking, and jogging. Other amenities like a pool, sport courts and a lifestyle program will further promote active living.
6. Ensure Equitable Access: TalisTrails’ amenities and opportunities will be designed for all ages and abilities, and accessible to all demographics. The community’s thoughtful land planning will ensure pedestrian connection with pathways and trails throughout the community, and connection to the Miccosukee Greenway.
7. Mix It Up: TalisTrails will feature a diverse mix of homes – single-family, townhomes and multi-family – along with outdoor amenities, greenspaces, and commercial spaces like restaurants and retail. Just minutes from Downtown Tallahassee, it offers something for everyone.
8. Embrace Unique Character: Places that are different and unique can be helpful in promoting physical activity and emotional wellbeing. TalisTrails will provide opportunities to engage with the natural environment that surrounds the community. TalisTrails’ unique natural features and character will promote active and engaged healthy living and contribute to residents and visitors’ quality of life.
9. Promote Access to Healthy Food – TalisTrails will provide access to a full range of food options including healthy food choices. Currently, there are multiple food establishments and grocery stores within minutes of the community. Development plans within the community include restaurants, retail and other businesses.
10.Make It Active: TalisTrails will foster an environment for active, healthy living with recreational opportunities for all ages. Outdoor amenities will include miles of trails, parks and connections to the Miccosukee Greenway. Planned amenities include a pool, fitness center, play fields and a dog park. Thoughtful planning will ensure accessibility and promote a healthier, active lifestyle.
